I see quite often that people hate pet stores and always say they don't care for there guinea pigs and never ever buy them from there, it's rubish! There are lot's of good pet stores that are kind, experienced and give the guinea pigs good sized cages.
Cavy cages posted that pet store cages are litter box's, why are they trying to speak for every pet store in the world? Pet stores often sell a virerity of different sizes!Pet store cages are better than tacky cardboard cages that people often keep there guineas in.
They may say get a guinea pig from a rescue, but if there arn't any near you, you should quite happily go and get one from a pet store ONLY if they obviously know what there doing and take care of there guinea pigs. Most pet stores have experienced workers which know what there doing like when they sex them etc.
Pet Stores are under estimated!!!!

There are good petstores out there, but most chain petstores (i.e. petsmart, petco, stuff like that) are usually staffed with people who don't know enough about the animals to care for them properly. The best petstores are ones that are run by people who have animals their whole life and want to help out the community by selling supplies and the occasional pet. The pet store near my house is usually pretty good, but I had to teach the teenagers who work there how to tell the differenence between a male and a female guinea pig. As for cages, people say that petstore cages are way too small because they usually buy the wrong cage. People buying their first guinea pig usually get a cage that they think is the right size, but is actually for a smaller animal, like a hampster or a gerbil. I have a petstore cage that is HUGE, probably about 5 square feet.

Pet store do not look after their animals correctly. Well at least not all of them. From having them in cages with rabbits to keeping them in small, confined spaces, with pets of the opposite sex, pet stores plainly are not the best place to purchase an animal from. You Vicky. Do some research - just one look on this thread www.guineapigcages.com/forum/kitchen/20501-petstore-breeding-care-housing-disaster-threads.html shows what awful things can happen to a guinea pig in a pet shop.

'You Vicky. Do some research' Could you not be so rude when you post? If you need to, read the rules of the forum again.
My post is based on petstores that I have personally visited. I do not post anything that is not my personal opinion or from my experience. Georgina and I were just pointing out some of the good petstores that are out there.

Okay. But you said that pet stores in general get under-estimated. I believe this is not the case. Please have a look at the thread I referred you too - look at the experiances. I cannot see how a place that is mis-sexing guinea pigs, neglecting guinea pigs, and in some cases killing them if they aren't getting sold can make a place so good, it is actually underestimated!

Yes, some petstores are bad, like I said. I also said that it tends to be the major chains that are bad (which are the stores that most of the threads on cavycages are about) Many small pet stores are very good about how they run things.

So you think pet shops are a good thing...how come you say that when you got a female from a pet shop pregnant? Surely that is proof that pet stores are not all that good! A female that comes pregnant and has babies, may be fine for you, but for people who maybe don't have the room for a new litter of guinea pigs it could be disastrous. Then the guinea pigs will end up in rescues...it's a horrible vicious cycle.

The guinea pig that I got from the pet store pregnant was dropped off at the pet store pregnant. Someone dropped the whole family off at the pet store, she did not get pregnant at the petstore.

i happen to work for a petstore, and it isnt all taht flash, but it sure as hell doesnt kill animals. such a broad statement can not refer to all petshops, and i doubt very much that you have been to everyone in the entire world, thus you have no fitr right to say sucha statement, leave these two alone, can you not realise they are just children! they may not have learnt such things yet, they will with time, yelling at them wont help. just let them be!

Georgina I was just about to refer you to the same cavycages thread. Infact the whole of kitchen, is full of such horrible stories of petstores.
I have to say I agree with Coopersmummy, even if the care in the petshop is good, what goes on behind the scenes is bad.
I am not sure what you're refering to when you talk about people keeping guinea pigs in cardboard boxes?! Who does that!? In general basically all the cages sold in petshops ARE too small, but they are advertised as "luxury" and other such like words, don't be fooled

Well not all petstores. Look I know that some are cruel but not all are and I dont think they ALL should be talked about as bad things.
